Sustainability of cotton-growing systems in Africa: four ambitions to guide CIRAD's research

Cotton provides the world’s leading natural fibre. but the sector is facing new challenges including climate change as well as social and environmental issues. To address those challenges, CIRAD has pinpointed four ambitions that will frame its cotton research over the coming decade.

On the basis of collective internal reflection and discussions with its partners, CIRAD has defined a 10-year roadmap [2023-2033] for its research on the cotton supply chain. This roadmap is based on the global situation of the sector, CIRAD's positioning and resources, and an analysis of the main challenges facing the sector over the next decade. To contribute to more sustainable cotton growing, CIRAD has set itself four goals:

  • Ambition 1 : Adapt cropping practices to climate change and reduce their environmental impact.
  • Ambition 2: Make African cotton more profitable and competitive
  • Ambition 3: Build capacity among players in African cotton chains
  • Ambition 4: Position African cotton chains better on a territory scale
